We took a small plane south from the international airport near Belize city to the coastal town of Dangriga.

The flight gives a good view of coastal Belize. A wide coastal plain is fringed with shallow lagoons and grass flats and the border between land and water is a mangrove swamp. Offshore there is a barrier reef, beyond which the sea bottom drops away quickly.
